1. Picnic in Metcalf Bottoms
Metcalf Bottoms is one of the more quiet entrances to the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Metcalf Bottoms is accessible from Wears Valley Road and is a great combination with the connection to the Foothills Parkway just miles away. The combination can make for a beautiful afternoon. Metcalf Bottoms is a picnic area with a stream and several walkways and hikes. Discover the Little Greenbrier School and where the Walker Sisters lived. Have you heard of them? Wikipedia tells us this about the Little Greenbrier School: The Little Greenbrier School is a former schoolhouse and church in the ghost town of Little Greenbrier in Sevier County, Tennessee, United States. Located near Gatlinburg in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, it was built in 1882, and was used as a school and church almost continuously until 1936.
Metcalf Bottoms is free, entrance to the National Park is at no cost and for this we are grateful. We highly recommend picking up or packing a picnic and some fresh cold waters for an awesome experience with just the family and your Jeep.
2. Parrot Mountain and Gardens
Parrot Mountain and Gardens is nestled on four acres of beautiful landscaped gardens. Hundreds and hundreds of beautiful tropical birds and thousands and thousands of flowers and plants and trees. See, Touch and Feel beautiful creatures Stroll down beautiful paved pathways, enjoy viewing tens of thousands of flowers and plants. Have your picture taken sitting in our unique butterfly, peacock and dragonfly benches. Families can enjoy the deli and gift shop also! This park is family friendly and all ages will enjoy it. Once you have experienced the park, take off in your Jeep Wrangler on to your next adventure!
3. Cades Cove 11 Mile Loop
An 11-mile, one-way loop road circles the cove, offering familiesthe opportunity to sightsee at a leisurely pace. Allow at least two to four hours to tour Cades Cove, longer if you walk some of the area’s trails. Wildlife viewing is very popular and can lead to traffic stops. Watch for black bear and deer sightings, stay a clear distance from all wildlife. Find many stops along the loop, a grist mill, picnic locations, a welcome area and more. This is a very popular choice for most people who visit the Smokies and we can assure you it will be awesome in your jeep!
4. Cherokee, NC
Without a doubt a drive over the Smoky Mountains to North Carolina is a fantastic idea for the family. The views are spectacular and can only be experienced when you drive up to Newfound Gap and then down to NC where you find the Oconaluftee Area of the Smokies. Watch for elk! They have become quite an attraction to this area. You will pass the Chimney Tops, an excellent picnic area, Newfound Gap where you can see the very top peaks of the mountains and down again to Cherokee, NC. Cherokee brings it’s own charm with the crafts and foods offered by the people of Cherokee. A short trip further to Bryson City will provide even more delight. This will be a full day trip in your Jeep.
5. Free Fishing for Kids
When you discover Mynatt Park and North Park in Gatlinburg, you are in for a special time. Both parks are located in Gatlinburg. North Park you will find as you enter Gatlinburg on the right before stoplight #1. This park has a great area for free fishing for kids. Find picnic tables and playground equipment and a great place to relax with the family. Mynatt Park is located at the end of Historic Nature Trail Road and is beautiful. Kids can fish free, you can sit by the rushing creek and enjoy the sights and sounds, many picnic tables are available along with tennis courts and playground equipment. These two parks are a delight and at no additional cost to families. It’s another great idea to pack some drinks and pick up some sandwiches and enjoy the day out!
